Light switches, explained: 1-way vs 2-way, levers and dimmers (South African buyer’s guide)

Every room in the house has one, and almost nobody thinks about them until they’re renovating or a lever breaks. Here’s the plain-English guide to choosing light switches in South Africa — what the jargon means, which brands to trust, and how to buy the right one first time.

The jargon, decoded

  • Lever — the part you press. A “2 lever” switch controls two separate lights from one plate.
  • 1-way — one switch controls the light. The standard for most rooms.
  • 2-way — TWO switches control the same light (top and bottom of a staircase, both ends of a passage, bedroom door + bedside). If you’ve ever wished you could turn the passage light off from the other end, you want 2-way.
  • 2×4 / 4×4 — the wall-box size. 2×4 (100x50mm) is the common vertical plate; 4×4 (100x100mm) is the square plate used where more levers live together.

How many levers?

Count the lights you want to control from that spot. Kitchen with main light + under-counter lighting = 2 levers. Open-plan living with three zones = 3 levers. Buy a plate with a spare lever if you’re planning to add lights later — it’s cheaper than rewiring the plate.

1-way or 2-way?

Passages, staircases and large bedrooms deserve 2-way switching — it needs an extra wire between the two switch points, so it’s easiest to spec during a renovation or new build. Everywhere else, 1-way does the job. (A 2-way switch also works fine as a 1-way, so when in doubt, buy 2-way.)

Dimmers

A dimmer module replaces one lever and gives you mood control — just make sure your bulbs are DIMMABLE LEDs. Ordinary LEDs flicker or buzz on a dimmer. Check the box: it must say dimmable.

Replacing a switch yourself?

Swapping a like-for-like switch plate is one of the simpler DIY jobs — but the wiring behind it must stay compliant, and anything beyond a straight swap (new 2-way runs, new circuits) is an electrician’s job and needs to be reflected on your CoC. When in doubt, get a professional in; it’s a quick job for them.
